Biography

Choreographer/ Dancer/ Composer/ Filmmaker

Kit (he/him) is a queer multidisciplinary artist born in Waiheke Island, Aotearoa New Zealand.

A graduate of the New Zealand School of Dance, he majored in Contemporary Dance for the 3 year diploma course.

His highlights during his time at the school include performing in Political Mother by Hofesh Shechter for Graduation Season and travelling to New York and Shanghai, China in his third year to be apart of the Metamorphosis International Dance Residency led by European choreographers Iratxe Ansa and Igor Bacovich,

Since graduating, Kit has been involved in a variety of projects including music videos, dancing in the Rambert Dance Company installation in London, and working with NZ based choreographer Malia Johnston for the 2018 season of RUSHES.

In 2018 Kit began to create his first full length choreographic work Utopia #9 and was fortunate enough to develop the work further during his Autumn residency at Wellesley Studios alongside collaborating international artists. The work features a self composed music score and premiered to a sold out audience at Tempo Dance Festival in October 2019. It also toured to Wellington NZ for a second season in March 2020 to further critical success.

In 2019 Kit collaborated with Dance Plant Collective for Tūrama Festival (as a dancer and composer) and for their residency at Lucy Guerin Inc in Melbourne. He travelled to Perth for STRUT Dance’s Crystal Pite intensive, attended Anouk van Dijks Counter technique workshop and Footnote Dance’s Choreolab.

In 2020 Kit began working as a company dancer with New Zealand’s new contemporary ballet company - ‘Ballet Collective Aotearoa’ and performed with them for their debut season of Subtle Dances as part of Auckland Art’s Festival and Dunedin Arts Festival in 2021. He also began co choreographing a work titled Reset with Bella Wilson (in development).

This same year he has toured NZ with Primarily Dance’s GROOVES; performed as Albrecht in Mary Jane O’Reillys’ Ballet Noir, and had his music compositions commissioned for a variety of dance and theatre works. He also co choreographed the dance film Cascade with Amber Libertè which premiered as a semi-finalist at the Paris Play Film Festival.

Kit’s success has led to him being granted the North Harbour Club AIMES Arts Award - sponsored by ASB in 2020.

Kit was also chosen as the inaugural recipient of the Bill Sheat Dance Award in 2021.

In 2022 he created a 9 part dance film series titled Turbulent Kingdoms with funding from Creative New Zealand. 2 of the films from this project have won awards in film festivals in Paris, São Paulo, Rome, LA and Toronto. Alongside this Kit was commissioned to choreograph a solo work for New Zealand School of Dances For by Four season.

He was supported by the Todd Trust to travel to Canada for Springboard Danse Montreal where he danced in pieces by Johannes Wieland and James Vivieros.

Kit was supported by the Peacocke Dance Trust to start developing his next choreographic work at a residency in Italy at Orsolina28.

He was then granted the 2022 Tup Lang Choreographic Award from Creative New Zealand. This enabled him to undergo a second residency period for his upcoming solo choreographic work in 2023 with a self composed sound score. Other music commissions Kit has recently had include creating a piece for other dance works/ short films such as Classical Collab; New Zealand School of Dance; Madison Fotti Knowles and Kayla Paige.

Kit then in 2023 performed as a dancer in Bella Wilson’s STRUCTURE; Albrecht in Mary Jane O’Reilly’s Ballet Noir for a second season and choreographed/ created the music for a work for the New Zealand School of Dance’s second year students titled OUTLIER.

Kit is represented by Human Agency in New Zealand.

As of January 2024 - Kit will be based in London.
